Full time term position for Autism Itinerant position. Duties to commence from September 2, 2025 to June 26, 2026.

The Itinerant for Autism is a valuable support and contributor to the programming conversations for students on the Autism Spectrum. Working collaboratively with school staff, students, and families, the Itinerant provides recommendations, support and direction around programming needs to ensure students are successful in their learning. 

Staff will engage a blended service delivery model encompassing both direct service and virtual services as required. 

As a Itinerant for Autism, your work will focus on your application of the 7 Determinants of the School Development Model which are: Wellness and Positive Relationships; Optimal Learning Environments; Instructional Practice; Assessment Practices; Collective Efficacy; Evidence-based Decision Making, and Teachers as Learners.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in dealing with students presenting with diverse learning needs at the school level. 
  • Strong communication, advocacy and problem-solving skills. 
  • Experience in facilitating professional learning for teachers especially in areas such as Functional Behaviour Analysis (FBA), Strategies for Teaching Students on the Autism Spectrum, TEACCH, PECS, PEERS, Behavioural Planning, JASPER etc. 
  • Training in the areas of Autism and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention would be considered to be an asset. 
  • Be familiar with the Autism Action Plan. 
  • The Autism Itinerant will be primarily responsible for providing professional learning and support to school personnel working with students diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. Support will be provided through: 
  • Consultation and problem-solving to assist school teams in adjusting student's programs to address ongoing issues or concerns. 
  • Working closely with other NLSchools personnel to provide training and support in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorders, as per the provincial professional development plan. 
  • Assisting school teams in the development and revision of programs to meet the individual needs of students. 
  • Assisting teachers in the completion of F.B.A. to assist in the development of support plans and response protocols to address behavioural concerns. 
  • Being part of a provincial network designed to enhance expertise and quality programming for students on the Autism Spectrum. 
  • Collaborating with other educators to promote effective programming in inclusive classrooms. 
  • Supporting teachers new to students with A.S.D. 
  • Establishing/organizing/maintaining A.S.D. learning circles for teachers. 
  • Liaising with the A.S.D. Consultant at the Department of Education. 
  • Knowledge and experience with autism programming to enhance student achievement with a focus on communication and social emotional learning. 
  • Strong understanding of transition planning at all levels. 
  • Participation in school meetings and liaising with various community partners as requested .

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Education
  • Bachelor of Special Education or equivalent
  • Master's degree in Counseling Psychology, Special Education or equivalent, or related field
  • Equivalencies will be considered
  • This job requires travel and the use of a personal vehicle. 

Annual Teacher Salary Scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits contained within the agreement.  

Applicants without the required qualifications may be considered in accordance with Clause 37.01 (d) of the provincial collective agreement.
